Ruto breaks ground for construction of Ksh.18B Mwache dam

The ceremony was attended by Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, PS Irrigation Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, PS Water Dr. Paul Rono, Water Secretary Eng. Sao Alima, and Irrigation Secretary Mr. Aboud Moeva.
Others included representatives from both the national and county levels of government.
The project, which will cost Ksh.8 billion, is a collaboration between the World Bank and the Kenyan government.
"The Sh18 Billion project — financed by the Government of Kenya and the World Bank — will supply more than 230 Million liters of water a day for both irrigation and domestic use, benefiting at least 1.6 Million people in Kwale and Mombasa Counties," President Ruto said.
The project which is 7 percent complete, will take an estimated 54 months to complete and is expected to increase a sustainable bulk water supply to Mombasa and Kwale counties.
The project will benefit at least 1.6 million people in the two counties, according to the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation.
It dam will also provide irrigation water to a 2000-hectare land that is adjacent to the dam.
Mwache Dam is located on the Mwache River in Fulugani village, Kwale County, about 22 kilometers west of Mombasa County in Kenya's coastal region.
