Road accidents shouldn't be blamed on my term in office - Murkomen
Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has
reiterated that dealing with excessive loss of lives through road accidents needs
collective responsibility from all Kenyans.
Speaking at the AIC Bible College in Narok town on Sunday
Murkomen said since independence the trend has been in existence, adding that a
lack of money to support the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and
traffic police is a major contributor to the menace.
Murkomen further said that since independence, a serious
strategy to curb deaths is yet to be realised saying the national catastrophe must
not be blamed on his term in office.
He said motorists do not obey traffic rules, hence the
increase in road carnage, adding that technological solutions and instant fines
shall soon be in place to serve as a deterrence.
He said a regulation currently at the Attorney General’s office
and the National Assembly to find a solution to the menace that claims nearly
3500 lives annually.
In addition, Murkomen said real time mobile cameras fitted
in all motor vehicles will help in accountability over accidents.
His sentiments were echoed by Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei,
Narok Senator Ledama OleKina and Mara Ward MCA Chepkwony Kipng’eno who were
present at the event.
Kelena OleNchoe, the Chairman Maa Council of Elders on his
part reminded that his role will remain to support the Government of the day
for the good of progress away from divisive politics.
