Rescue operations for woman who jumped off the Kilifi bridge suspended
According to witnesses, the woman had travelled from Malindi and boarded a motorcycle upon her arrival in Kilifi town to cross the Kilifi bridge when she asked the boda boda driver to drop her in the middle of the bridge and the jumped off the bridge and into the ocean at 5 a.m. on Thursday.
The woman, identified as Beatrice Kalume, 22, is said to have tried to call for help after jumping into the water and even swam for a while before drowning.
According to Abdi Shalo of the Kilifi Boat Operators Association, cases of people drowning have increased due to a lack of adequate diving equipment, despite the industry pushing the Kilifi government to address the issue.
In addition, Shalo has blamed the police officers guarding the Kilifi bridge due to the rising cases of people throwing themselves into the deep waters on the bridge, despite the fact that the officers are responsible for protecting the bridge
