Religious leaders urge political restraint for National development
Nairobi Diocese Catholic Archbishop Philip Anyolo emphasized the need for clarity among the three branches of government to prevent a potential constitutional crisis.
He also condemned the government for implementing punitive tax measures that have placed a significant financial burden on citizens.
During a mass wedding ceremony for over 50 couples at the Riara Catholic Diocese in Kiambu County, Archbishop Anyolo expressed his concerns about the current political climate.
He remarked that Kenyans are increasingly dissatisfied with the ongoing political machinations, which have overshadowed crucial developmental issues.
"We need sobriety in the country, and we want politics to take its rightful form so that the executive branch can properly engage with the judiciary and the legislative branch," he stated. "There seems to be a lot of confusion, and this could breach the constitution of our country."
At PEFA Church along Thika Road in Nairobi, Bishop John Okinda criticized President William Ruto's tax strategy, claiming it exacerbates poverty among Kenyans.
He argued that the current taxation system disproportionately affects those without jobs, leaving them without financial means.
"We urge your office and your experts to consider a tax framework that is manageable for Kenyans at this time," he said.
Bishop Okinda also raised concerns regarding the transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), calling on the government to ensure a smooth process that guarantees access to quality healthcare for all citizens.
