Raymond Moi says ‘the playing field is not level’ in Rongai polls

Incumbent Rongai Member of Parliament Raymond Moi has alleged that the ongoing election has been marred by irregularities.

Speaking after casting his vote on Monday, Moi said that ‘the playing field is not level’ calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure there is transparency in the electoral process.

“You hear a lot of things…that ballot boxes have been stuffed. Elected members are all over Rongai… there are mobilisers and ward agents. It is not fair, the playing field is not level, they are out there attempting to intimidate voters,” Moi said.

“When they hear a Senator…Governor is here and are campaigning for the other party, they feel intimidated. Why should they bring all these people, they brought 54 of them against one individual.”

The Rongai MP expressed confidence that he will retain his seat, saying that he has served the electorates well.

Moi added that his opponents are still going round the constituency, issuing money to voters and coercing them.

“They are still campaigning, they are breaking the law because campaign period is over. The Onus is still on IEBC, they are not conducting this election in a free and fair manner,” he said.

Last week, Deputy President-elect Rigathi Gachagua camped in the constituency to campaign for Paul "Mamba" Chebor, the UDA candidate and Moi’s strong opponent.

Moi's candidature in the parliamentary elections was also marred with controversy after Lee Njiru - who was the late retired President Daniel arap Moi's press secretary, endorsed Paul Chebor.
