Rastafarian Society condemns Supreme Court ruling on LGBTQ
The Rastafarian society of Kenya has condemned the Supreme Court ruling that allowed members of the LGBTQ community
to form associations.
Addressing the media in Nairobi on Friday, the society declared that they are not in support of the LGBTQ community terming it as an erosion of African morals.
The group emphasized that the government should be focusing mainly on the ongoing economic and food situation in the country and not on practices that according to them, go against all traditions that govern Africans.
The Rastafarians say the Jamii, the basic
ingredient of society which is composed of a marriage between the opposite
sexes society is threatened.
"Tunalazimishwa kufanya mambo ambayo hatupendi na wazungu, sisi waafrika tunafaa tuzingatie mila na tamaduni zetu na tufunze watoto wetu mwelekeo bora ambao utabadilisha hali ngumu ya maishi, ambayo tunaskumiwa na wazungu ili tuzidi kuwa maskini, tuendelee kuwaomba ama kuwategemea,” Ras Wambua said.
The Supreme Court verdict that allowed the registration of LGBTQ groupings in the country continues to elicit public reactions with religious and political leaders condemning the ruling.
On Monday, the Supreme Court of Kenya ruled that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community have the right to association.
The judgment brought to a close a nearly decade-long court battle and debate on the rights accorded to gays and homosexuals in the country.
The judges in their majority judgment said the decision by the lower courts to deny the members of the gay community in Kenya their right to register as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) was discriminatory.
