Rainfall to reduce in Nairobi from tomorrow - Met Department
The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that the
heavy rains that have been battering Nairobi and its environs are expected to
subside starting Friday.
The downpours have caused significant flooding in various
parts of Nairobi, bringing many activities to a standstill.
According to the Met Dept’s latest forecast, a reduction in
rainfall is expected over the city and surrounding areas, with drier conditions
anticipated to follow.
“The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts a reduction in
rainfall over Nairobi and surrounding areas beginning Friday, with drier
conditions expected to follow,” said the Met Dept. in an X statement Thursday.
Speaking at the 10th National Climate Outlook Forum in Garissa
County on Thursday, Kenya Met. Director Dr. David Gikungu noted that parts of
Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin may still experience rainfall leading
into the long rains season, beginning in the last week of March.
“The MAM 2025 forecast indicates that near to above-average
rainfall is expected over the Lake Victoria Basin, South Rift Valley, most of
the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the southern parts of the Southeastern
lowlands and the extreme northern parts of northwestern Kenya,” Dr. Gikungu
said.
“Near to below average rainfall is expected over Central Rift
Valley, Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County), most of
Northwest, Coastal region, Southeastern lowlands and isolated areas over the
Highlands West of the Rift Valley.”
