Raila aims to champion for climate action in Africa if elected AUC chairperson
Speaking during Kenya’s official launch of the AUC candidate, Odinga pledged to make climate change a top priority if elected to the prestigious position.
Fronted by President William Ruto, Odinga outlined his ambitious plans to champion environmental issues in Africa and hold the global north accountable for their role in climate crisis.
Odinga's commitment to addressing climate change is both timely and crucial. As the effects of global warming continue to wreak havoc on the continent, it is imperative that African leaders take a stand and demand action from the international community.
"Africa is a victim of climate change. Africa today suffers from disasters like floods and droughts yet it emits very little. Africa needs to be compensated. When we go to negotiate as Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, or Algeria, the offenders will not listen, but if we go as one Africa they must listen to us and we will get a fair deal over climate change," said Odinga.
Global reports suggest that Africa contributes less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet bears the brunt of the devastating impacts of climate change. From droughts and floods to food insecurity and displacement, African countries are on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
To address the continental challenge, Odinga has promised to use his position to advocate for sustainable development policies, renewable energy initiatives, and climate resilience strategies across the continent. By prioritizing climate change on the African agenda, Odinga aims to ensure a more sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.
“We also need to green Africa because it is the second largest carbon sink in the world, the Congo forest. These are issues and challenges that we can overcome if we have an organized office in Addis Ababa in the Ethiopia,” added Odinga.
In addition, Odinga championed for appropriate use of the vast resources Africa shares and tame exploitation from outside players.
"We need to make sure that Africa uses the resources that it has effectively. We need to also ensure that Africa trades with this wealth," he said.
The AUC chairperson's elections will take place in 2025 as Chad's Moussa Faki, the current chairperson, will exit after his two-term tenure.
