PS Hinga's sweaty press conference on Housing Fund elicits hilarious reactions

Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga and StateHouse Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed

After a sustained - and widely unpopular - national debate over the controversial Housing Fund which seeks to have employers and employees make a monthly mandatory contribution to the Fund, Housing, StateHouse Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed decided to help educate the masses.

In comes Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga and social media goes ablaze with memes and hilarious takes. This was supposed to be an informative session to help break down the jargon and clear the air around the thorny issue.

But PS Hinga's press conference did not go as planned and all Kenyans seem to have gotten out of it were memes of him drinking copious amounts of water, knocking down his glass of water and sweating, a lot.

The presser, as all government pressers go, could have gone largely unnoticed and elicited little interest if Mr Hinga didn't conduct it in the uncharacteristically impassioned way in which he went about it.

He is a very smart man Hinga, but we'll just assume the heat and his passion for the subject at hand got the better of him.

While speaking from State House, a jittery Hinga rumbled on and on, nervously blathering about the benefits of the Fund, distinguishing it from a 'tax' and basically attempting to demystify the confusion.

While addressing members of the fourth estate, Hinga went back and forth, heaved and puffed, talked over himself and, as the pressure mounted, appeared to sweat profusely as he whipped out his white handkerchief to repeatedly clear up his now-clammy face.

Mr Hinga was at pains to articulate himself and, for over an hour, appeared to desperately wish to win a solo argument as the members of the press looked on ready with their questions.

At some point, Hinga, who now had adopted an uncomfortably preachy voice and wouldn't stop gesticulating, knocked over his glass of water as he nervously shuffled through a sheaf of papers.

"Unaona ata vile nimesweat... Sorry, I'm normally very animated," he said to the media, as he awkwardly repositioned the glass, red-faced with the StateHouse Spokesperson standing by his side and acting like everything was going swimmingly.

Hinga's clumsiness and apparent tension throughout the entire briefing was Twitter fodder and trended for hours after he was done.

On Twitter, Kenyans had a field day dissecting his near-comical, if not utterly animated, body language with many comparing it to the antics of a crusade preacher.

Journalist Cornelius Rono shared an edited video that tried to sum up Hinga's entire crusade into just gaffes, sweating and awkward silence.

The video has since gone viral and from a communications point of view, this is bad because it overshadowed everything Mr Mohamed and Mr Hinga had tried to achieve.

Renowned banker Mohamed Wehliye chimed in too, saying, "When a government PS has to sell an idea by preaching like Pastor Nganga, ujue kuna chida..."

The Housing PS indicated that the government chose the programme to solve Kenya’s housing market which they termed broken.

“You get back your money at the time of retiring, death or seven years, whichever comes first. If you want to get it out, you will get out your portion, the employer portion stays in because it protects the capital of the fund. After 14 years, you can now exit your employer portion as well,” he said.
