Protests paralyze traffic on Nairobi’s Jogoo road over Mbotela demolitions

Traffic along Nairobi’s busy Jogoo Road came to a standstill for several hours as residents of Mbotela Estate staged protests against the demolition of their homes and businesses.

The demonstrators, who claim rightful ownership of the contested land, accused a private developer of destroying their properties in defiance of a court order.

Hundreds of frustrated residents, many of them women, spent their Sunday blocking Jogoo Road, laying mats across the tarmac in a symbolic protest.

The demonstration caused a massive traffic jam along one of the city's key thoroughfares.

The demolitions have left many residents homeless and business owners reeling from losses they estimate to be in the millions.

The affected community alleges that the private developer, who claims ownership of the land, failed to present valid documentation before proceeding with the demolitions.

Pauline Nyawira, Mbotela Resident: “They came and said they have papers and want us to move, but they didn’t show us those documents.”

John Weru, Mbotela Resident: “If we’ve been here since 1971, where was he?”

The residents are demanding justice and immediate intervention from authorities to resolve the land dispute and prevent further demolitions.

This incident highlights the growing tension over land ownership in urban areas, with communities often bearing the brunt of such disputes.

As protests continue, questions about the legality of the developer’s actions and the enforcement of court orders remain unanswered.

Efforts to mediate between the parties involved are now crucial to restoring normalcy in the area.

For the affected residents, the fight for their homes is far from over.
