Prosecution seeks 14-Day detention for officers arrested in Collins Jumaisi escape

The prosecution is seeking 14 days to detain five police officers stationed at Gigiri Police Station.

The 14 days is to allow them conclude investigations against the five.

CPL Ronald Babo, PC Evans Kipkirui, PC Mollent Achieng ,PC Zachary Nyabuto and PC Gerald Mutuku are being investigated for allegedly aiding escape of prisoners who were held at the station .

"The respondents were arrested after the escape of 13 remandees who were in custody for various offences," reads the application

The court was told that the five respondents were on duty the day the prisoners escaped .

"The investigations in the matter are not yet complete ,the respondents mobile phones have been presented to cyber crime unit based at DCI HQ for forensic lab for further analysis," reads the application.

Similarly, the prosecution says that there are other accomplices who are still at large and the five police officers have indicated there willingness to lead to their arrests.

The officers were arrested on Tuesday after 13 prisoners escaped the police station by cutting the wire mesh at the basking bay. One of the escapees was Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in the Kware murders. 

Following the incident, Acting IG Gilbert Masengeli ordered the officers in charge of the station to be arrested, describing it as an 'inside job.'

Masengeli said that the investigating officers were screening the CCTV footage to provide more details to the escape.
