Prof Kiplagat Kotut appointed new acting Moi University VC as Isaac Kosgey suspended
Prof Kiplagat Kotut has been picked as the new acting Vice Chancellor of Moi University.
The University Board Chairperson Prof.Noah Midamba announced
the new changes on Friday saying Prof Kotut would be deputised by the new Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Prof. Khaemba Ongeti, in an acting capacity.
“I have the honour to announce the new Acting Vice
Chancellor of Moi University: Prof. Kiplagat Kotut,” said the board.
“I also have the pleasure to announce the new Acting Deputy
Vice Chancellor, Academic Research, Extension and Student Affairs: Prof.
Khaemba Ongeti.”
Prof Kotut now takes over from Prof Isaac Kosgey who has been sent on a compulsory leave of eight months, as the Head of Finance and Legal Affairs have been suspended.
The board chairperson committed to revamping the institution
which was on the verge of collapsing, saying that in 100 days, he would set up
measures to address the issues bedevilling the second-oldest university in the
country.
“Last week we held a very fruitful meeting with the Unions
and agreed on the need to get the University on its feet by co-creating
solutions to address all the pressing issues. Our mission is very clear, and
that is to turn around the University to its original glory as a world-class
teaching, research and innovation hub,” he said.
“Our focus, commitment and passion to deliver on this mission is palpable. We have laid out clear milestones to be achieved in the coming weeks and months and we are looking forward to working with you to communicate the substantive outcomes of our efforts.”
The change of guard at the institution comes a week after a new university board was sworn in as the former board was dismissed.
Prof Midamba will serve alongside Prof. Ronald Wasike, Dr. Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Dr. Edward Sambili and Anne Weceke Makori as board members.
This even as the Education CS had vowed to clean up the institution in December over mismanagement, saying that investigations had commenced and those found culpable would be sacked.
“We are prepared to take necessary actions so that our universities are run in a transparent manner so that we have credible institutions offering proper academic qualifications. We are ready to make hard decisions to make sure there is hygiene in this sector,” CS Ogamba said then.
