Private vehicles take the lead in road accidents, this is according to Peter Odhiambo, Assistant Superintendent of Police at the Traffic Department Headquarters.

"Personal vehicles are the leading cause of accidents on our roads, followed by motorcyclists, then truck drivers, then matatus, that come a distant fourth," Odhiambo stated.

Despite the focus on public service vehicles (PSVs), Odhiambo emphasized the need for private vehicle drivers to adhere to traffic rules.

"As much as we are going to concentrate on PSVs, let us ensure that the drivers of personal vehicles are also following the rules: leave early, do not be fatigued, do not drink and drive—the normal regulations," he told Spice FM on December

Odhiambo pointed out the gravity of the accident situation in Kenya. He recognizes the profitability goals of businesses but cautions against compromising lives.

"Let us make sure that if you are doing an 8-hour drive, let us have two drivers, take some time and rest. Even as much as you are targeting the highest profit margin," he said.

Odhiambo has also called on all drivers to exercise maximum caution on roads for their safety and that of pedestrians.

"When you are doing routes, make sure it's a route you are familiar with. When you are doing a route that you are not very familiar with, especially at night, it's a problem. Make sure you are observing the speed limits," he said.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Mary Wangui Omari, Commandant of the Traffic Police Department, echoed Odhiambo's concerns, emphasizing the role of human error in road accidents.

"Non-adherence is a big factor in road accidents. 86% are caused by human errors like crossing roads. 70-80 percent of victims of accidents are men, both pedestrians and those in vehicles. Children are very obedient to rules of crossing roads; adults, not so much."

Fatigue and a penchant for speed were identified as major contributors to accidents, with Omari urging drivers to plan their journeys carefully.

"Speed is the killer cause of accidents. Always plan your journey. Why are you on your phone and driving? Why are you intoxicated and driving?"
