'Prioritize track record in new Cabinet appointments,' MP Njeri Maina urges President Ruto

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina speaking on Citizen TV's Day Break

Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Njeri Maina says competency and accountability should be the parameters that President William Ruto considers while constituting his next cabinet.

This comes after the President made an unprecedented move on Thursday to dismiss all his Cabinet Secretaries, sparing only Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, who also holds the position of Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs.

Speaking on Citizen TV's Daybreak show on Friday, Njeri advised against insisting on particular persons in the Cabinet, but rather focusing on their track record.

"It is important that we see a Cabinet that is competent, accountable, and comprises individuals with a proven track record. It is also important that we avoid pinpointing specific individuals that the president should appoint because, at the end of the day, competency must be the priority," she said.

While dissolving his Cabinet, President Ruto stated that he would embark on "extensive consultations" across different sectors and political formations in forming his new team.

The Kirinyaga Woman Rep recognized the President's intention to consult across different sectors and political formations in forming his new team but insisted on accountability.

"What the Kenyan people are saying is that accountability must be a priority. While consultations are ongoing, we must establish minimum standards for anyone holding a Cabinet Secretary position," she said.

Njeri further emphasized that elected Members of Parliament should be accountable to their constituents by ensuring they exercise their mandate during the vetting process.

"Parliament must also take a firm stance because it conducts the vetting process. As an MP, I must be accountable to the people. Therefore, I must be accountable to my constituents and to Kenyans in general for any action I take, because Article One of the Constitution states that sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya,” said the MP.
