President William Ruto has called on the provincial
administration in the Central Kenya region to work out a plan to end alcohol
abuse in the region.
The Head of State said the substance abuse
amongst the youth is worrying and asked the county government’s to join the
national government in the fight.
During the ground breaking ceremony for 1,050
housing units in the Affordable Housing Plan in Kiambu County on Thursday, the
President expressed his concerns over the rising cases of alcohol abuse amongst
the youth.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated: “Hapa
county zetu tano rais tuko na shida ya pombe haramu na dawa za kulevya
inaharibu watoto wetu.”
The high rate of drug abuse menace in the
Central Kenya region has been blamed on unregulated alcohol selling joints.
DP Gachagua added: “Magavana wa eneo hili pia
nyinyi mmetukosea, you have licensed every shop as bar and restaurant. We want
our Governors to sit down and agree that you can not license every outlet to
sell for 24 hours.”
President Ruto directed the provincial
administration to work with county governments and end the problem.
“Mmesikia mambo Riggy G amesema kuhusu watoto
wetu, nataka maafisa wa usalama kushirikiana na county gpvernments kuona jinsi mtamaliza
hiyo shida,” said the President.
The Head of State said the government is
committed to achieving a total of 50,000 housing units in Kiambu County alone.
“Hapa tayari ni nyumba 1,050, tunataka
kujenga nyumba 49,000 zingine hapa Kiambu…we want to bring dignity to our
people,” he said, adding that the project will be completed in 24 months.
