Speaking during an impromptu inspection tour of the Kilimani Police Housing Project, which is part of the government's Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), the President emphasized the urgent need to improve the living conditions of security personnel.
He noted that many officers currently reside in ageing and inadequate facilities located within police stations and posts. “We must purpose to improve the living conditions of our police officers. As a government, we will not rest until we provide them with better living standards,” he said.
The Kilimani Police Housing Project, currently under construction, will deliver 542 housing units comprising studio apartments, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units.
In addition to residential spaces, the development will include a commercial centre, hospital, social hall, gym, Early Childhood Development (ECD) school, subordinate staff housing, and gatehouses. The project is expected to be completed in 45 months and will generate over 1,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for local residents.
President Ruto also underscored the broader economic impact of the Affordable Housing Programme, describing it as a practical implementation of his administration's development agenda and manifesto.
He said the initiative is designed not only to address the housing gap but also to create jobs for the youth and ensure that informal sector players such as Jua Kali artisans, mama mboga, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) benefit directly through material supply and labor opportunities.
Accompanied by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, and other senior ministry officials, the President reiterated his government’s vision for inclusive housing.
PS Hinga emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that all Kenyans—including police officers, military personnel, and prison officers—have access to decent and affordable housing. He added that the Kilimani project will support economic growth by actively involving MSMEs and players in the Jua Kali sector, helping to build a sustainable local supply chain.
