President Ruto, Raila meet at State House dinner

President William Ruto and his political rival Raila Odinga meet during a State Banquet hosted in honour of King Charles III at State House, Nairobi.

President William Ruto and his political rival Raila Odinga met on Tuesday evening during a State Banquet hosted in honour of King Charles III and his wife Queen Qamila.

Photos of the rare meet-up at State House Nairobi captured the two leaders in a jovial mood exchanging pleasantries as Mr Odinga greeted the King.

The two however did not sit at the same table perhaps due to protocol.

The Head of State and the opposition leader have not shared a platform in the recent past even though they have personally toned down on political salvos to allow for ongoing bi-partisan talks.

Even though the two leaders are rarely seen together publicly, their close allies have previously intimated that they have had private engagements in an attempt to resolve their political feud.

At the State House banquet, Mr Odinga who was accompanied by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, sat next to Council of Governors Chairperson Anne Waiguru. Notably, near Mr Odinga, was US Ambassador Meg Whitman.

On his first day visit to Kenya, the King, who is on a four-day tour in the country,  visited the Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum, where the King and President Ruto laid a wreath in honour of independence-era freedom fighters.

The royalty was also taken through the country's pre and post-independence un-edited history, which included visiting a camp of martyrs, that symbolizes a place of remembrance, healing and renewal.

His Majesty and President Ruto then laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, dedicated to honour freedom fighters and liberators who contributed to Kenya’s unity, peace and liberty.
