President Ruto holds talks with Haiti Transitional Presidential Council

President William Ruto holds a virtual meeting with the Haiti Transitional Presidential Council.

President William Ruto on Wednesday held a meeting with the  Haiti Transitional Presidential Council amid ongoing plans by Kenya to deploy at least 1,000 police officers to the war-torn Caribbean nation on a peace restoration mission.

President Ruto remained firm on his commitment to embark on the UN-sanctioned mission to Haiti.

"Kenya is a firm believer in the shared global values of multi-lateralism as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.  We will safeguard shared principles of humanity that enable us to advance peace, security and stability," said Ruto on Wednesday.

He added: "We shall establish communication channels as part of the ongoing engagement in restoring peace to Haiti."

The Haiti Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) led Engineer Edgard Leblanc Fils was sworn into office in April as it seeks to bring security back to the violence-wracked Caribbean nation.

President Ruto, following the formation of the council, lauded the change of leadership, labelling it a crucial step in the political transition of Haiti.

"The TPC has the singular task of moving speedily to re-establish key organs of the State critical to the restoration of law and order and necessary for the ushering of hope to all Haitians as prescribed by the Decree of April 12, 2024," said Ruto in April.
