President Ruto convenes special Cabinet meeting as floods death toll rises to 166
President
William Ruto will on Tuesday morning chair a special Cabinet meeting to discuss
the flood situation in the country.
Ruto
announced the meeting on the sidelines of the International Development
Association (IDA21) summit in Nairobi on Monday.
“Tomorrow
morning we are having a Cabinet meeting to discuss additional measures my government
is going to take to make sure that my citizens, who are victims of climate
change suffering mudslides and floods, are looked after,” he said.
As of
Monday evening, government figures showed that 166 people had died from
flooding since heavy rains began in most of Kenya in March.
Government Spokesperson
Isaac Mwaura told Citizen TV’s Monday Report program that over 60 people were
confirmed dead on Monday alone.
This was in the wake of Monday morning’s dam burst incident where flash floods hit Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, and wiped out homes and vehicles, killing at least 48 people.
