President Ruto appoints Prof. Makau Mutua as Constitutional Affairs advisor

Prof.
Makau Mutua has landed a new job in the Kenya Kwanza administration, becoming the latest beneficiary of the
broad-based government agreement between President William Ruto and former
Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
This as
President Ruto on Wednesday evening announced the appointment of Prof. Mutua
as his Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs.
The Head
of State noted that distinguished law professor, who served as Mr. Odinga’s
presidential campaign secretariat spokesperson ahead of the 2022 polls, boasts
a plethora of knowledge on the Constitution as well as human rights.
“I have
appointed Prof Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in
the Executive Office of the President. Prof Mutua brings a wealth of experience
in legal, constitutional and human rights matters. Congratulations Prof Mutua,”
Ruto said in a statement.
“I
welcome you to join a dynamic team of public servants in the implementation of
our Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda.”
Prof. Mutua, who also doubled as the head of Mr. Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign thinktank, is a former Dean at SUNY Buffalo
Law School.
From 1991-1996, he was the Associate Director of the Harvard
Law School Human Rights Program at Harvard University.
He was educated at the University of Nairobi, the University
of Dar-es-Salaam, and at Harvard Law School, where he obtained a Doctorate of
Juridical Science in 1987.
The professor is a former Vice President of the American Society of
International Law (ASIL), where he also served as a member of the Executive
Council, and was the Co-Chair of the 2000 Annual Meeting of ASIL.
In 2003, Prof. Mutua was appointed by the Government of Kenya
Chair of the Task Force on the Establishment of a Truth, Justice, and
Reconciliation Commission.
