The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has cautioned manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and healthcare facilities to store drugs according to the specified conditions following multiple complaints from the public over health concerns posed by low-quality products.

In a statement by PPB Chief Executive Officer Dr. Fred Siyoi, low-quality products are often linked to improper storage and handling and may affect patient health outcomes.

He advised all healthcare facilities to adhere to the Good Distribution Practices (GDP) to maintain product integrity across the supply chain.

"Manufacturers must ensure that any health products formulation intended for distribution in Kenya is designed, developed and tested to withstand high-temperature and high-humidity environmental conditions," the statement read in part.

Dr. Siyoi explained that all facilities should conduct stability studies in line with ICH Zone IVb climatic conditions to maintain a product's quality throughout its shelf life.

Training for all supply chain stakeholders for best practices when handling temperature-sensitive products must be adhered to.

Further, they should assess their packaging to protect products from moisture, heat and environmental conditions.

To enforce the directive, the Board will conduct inspections and compliance audits on the healthcare facilities.

Failure to comply with the guidelines may lead to the facility's licence been revoked, the product been recalled or other measures.
