Popular 'park and chill' spot in Juja closed indefinitely after two JKUAT students drown

Onlookers at the spot where two university students drowned over the weekend in a fun excursion gone awry.

The popular “park and chill” recreational area around Titanic Dam in Juja Sub County has been officially closed, with all activities in the vicinity banned indefinitely.

This decision follows the tragic drowning of two students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) just four days ago.

The incident has sparked serious concerns over the safety of the dam, which had become a popular weekend hotspot for revelers.

During an inspection of the site, the Juja security team, led by Assistant County Commissioner Mwangi wa Mwangi, announced that police officers will be stationed around the dam to enforce the ban and prevent any activities from taking place.

The area had recently seen a surge in visitors, with people parking their cars near the dam, consuming alcohol, and engaging in risky activities such as swimming.

At times, music concerts were held in the parking areas, attracting large crowds who were often unaware of the potential dangers posed by the dam’s waters.

In response to safety concerns, local hoteliers have been directed to hire professional divers to safeguard customers, particularly those enjoying boat rides on the dam.

A police report revealed that Titanic Dam has claimed the lives of four individuals in 2025 alone, including a highly trained GSU officer attached to the Recce squad.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and refrain from any activities around the dam until further notice.
