Police shoot in the air in standoff with locals in Mukuru kwa Njenga slums

More bodies retrieved at Kware dumpsite in Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi on July 13, 2024.

Tensions remained high during the second day of retrieving bodies at the Kware dumpsite in Mukuru kwa Njenga slums as area locals charged at police officers, demanding answers over the matter.

On Saturday, five more bodies wrapped in polythene bags were discovered at the dumpsite with their identities yet to be discovered.

The uneasiness from the crowd made them charge at the police officers, demanding for the sacks to be opened. To calm the situation, the Recce squad officers were forced to open fire in the air.

Efforts to cordon the premises through a police tape proved futile as the crowd accessed the scene and sought the officers to cede to their demands.

Police backup has since arrived in lorries as well as two police water canons incase the situation turned chaotic.

Last evening, police officers claimed the number of bodies retrieved as six, even though witnesses provided a higher figure.

The bodies were taken to City Mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death.
