Police probe shooting of a man in broad daylight on Mirema Drive
Police in Nairobi are investigating the
murder of a man in Mirema who was accosted by unknown assailants who shot
several times and killed him instantly as he drove after dropping a female
companion.
It remains unclear why the man, now
identified as Samuel Mugota, was murdered, with detectives suspecting a deal
gone sour.
At 1.57pm on Monday, according to CCTV
footage obtained by Citizen TV, a man in a cap and a coat, whom one would
assume is just a pedestrian, is seen approaching a Honda CRV and pulling out
what appears to be a pistol before opening fire.
A frantic woman who was across the road
walking is seen running for her dear life as gunshots rent the air.
When the man on a mission finishes his job,
he runs towards a vehicle that had blocked the road and is driven off; and just
like that, in a matter of 45 seconds, Mugota is dead.
The 40-year-old father of three is reported
to have dropped a woman in the area before being accosted as he made his way
out. Area Police Commander Peter Mwanzo says they are in pursuit of the
assailants.
“We were able to
identify four shots that got the victim and he died on the spot. Fortunately
the neighbours managed to pick the number plates and this is the information we’re
pursuing and shortly we will be able to catch up with him,” said Mwanzo.
The police are now trying to identify the men
behind the shooting and establish the motive.
“It’s difficult to
comprehend how heartless human beings can become, whether it is vengeance or
any other reason, it’s impossible to comprehend…because nothing was stolen from
the victim,” added the police boss.
Items recovered from the murdered man, which are
helping police profile him, include money in different currencies, seven
different national identity cards, six wallets, phones and laptops believed to
have been stolen.
The bullet-riddled car was towed to the
Kasarani Police Station. Detectives revealed that the vehicle is registered to
a different person who is helping with investigations.
Mugota’s female companion is in police
custody under interrogation. Several people have reported to Kasarani Police Station
with one positively identifying his I.D card claiming that he lost a sum of
Ksh.200,000 when it was stolen from him after being drugged by a woman in an
entertainment joint.
An autospy on the murder victim conducted at
the City Mortuary revealed that he died as a result of multiple bullet wounds.
His family moved his body to a mortuary in Kabati,
Murang’a County.
