Police officer who shot dead colleague, injured another in Gigiri detained for 14 days

The court has ordered the detention of a police officer
attached to Parliament for 14 days to allow investigators to probe a shooting
incident at Gigiri Police Station.
The incident resulted in the death of one officer, Erick
Munga, while another remains in critical condition at Aga Khan Hospital.
Nahashon Limo Kipkosgey will be held at Spring Valley Police
Station after his lawyer argued against his detention at Gigiri Police Station
due to threats to his life.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had sought a
21-day detention order to establish Kipkosgey's motive in the alleged murder.
Investigators told the court that additional time was needed
to record a statement from a key witness currently hospitalized, conduct
ballistic tests on the confiscated firearm at DCI headquarters, and complete
forensic analysis.
A postmortem report on the deceased is also required to
determine appropriate charges.
Police further cautioned that releasing Kipkosgey on bail
could lead to retaliation or interference with investigations.
However, his lawyer opposed the request, arguing that the
firearm is already in police custody and that Kipkosgey, as an officer,
understands the consequences of tampering with evidence or witnesses.
The ruling comes just a week after another police officer, Ezekiel
Tarus, who is attached to the Safaricom CEO, allegedly shot dead a colleague at
a lounge in Ruaraka.
On the seventh day of Tarus' custodial period, Chief
Magistrate Lucas Onyina ordered the prosecution to produce him in court within
24 hours with a decision to charge or release him.
