Police officer who lobbed teargas at Martha Karua's Azimio rally to be arraigned

A police officer arrested on Thursday for lobbing a tear gas canister at the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya rally in Kisii attended by the praty's running mate Martha Karua is expected to be arraigned in court on Friday.

Nyanza Regional Police Boss Karanja Muiruri confirmed that the officer was transferred to Kisumu Central Police Station cells on Thursday night.

According to the police boss, the officer identified as Josephat Makori was off-duty and had not been deployed at the event.

“Josephat Makori of Kisii Police Station was at the scene in civilian clothes and was not deployed there, is the one who dropped the teargas canister. This was witnessed by members of the public who beat him up accusing him of why he was spoiling their meeting. He was rescued by fellow police officers,” said police.

Karanja says the officer who's based at the Kisii Central police station has been directly linked to the incident that saw the meeting disrupted and leaders escorted out of the Gusii stadium for safety.

Speaking to Ramogi TV, Karanja says the officer will further face internal disciplinary action according to the National Police Service procedures.

Meanwhile, DCI officers are also still probing who else the officer might have colluded with to cause the chaos.
