Police officer who lobbed teargas at Martha Karua's Azimio rally to be arraigned
Nyanza Regional Police Boss Karanja Muiruri confirmed that the officer was transferred to Kisumu Central Police Station cells on Thursday night.
According to the police boss, the officer identified as Josephat Makori was off-duty and had not been deployed at the event.
“Josephat
Makori of Kisii Police Station was at the scene in civilian clothes and
was not deployed there, is the one who dropped the teargas canister. This was witnessed by
members of the public who beat him up accusing him of why he was spoiling their
meeting. He was rescued by fellow police officers,” said police.
Speaking to Ramogi TV, Karanja says the officer will further face internal disciplinary action according to the National Police Service procedures.
Meanwhile, DCI officers are also still probing who else the officer might have colluded with to cause the chaos.
