Police, NTSA officers deployed on major highways ahead of school reopening
Multi-agency teams drawn from the National Police Service (NPS)
and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) have been deployed along
major highways countrywide to man traffic ahead of school reopening..
Inspector
General of Police Japhet Koome, in a statement issued on Saturday, announced
that the officers had been dispatched following traffic witnessed nationwide as
a result of the heavy rains pounding the country.
IG Koome urged
motorists to collaborate with the officers, adding that the move comes days
before schools reopen for the second term next week hence traffic is expected
to increase.
“Primary
and secondary schools are due for re-opening next week during the rainy season.
The ongoing heavy rains and floods being experienced in the country have not
only claimed lives but also rendered some roads and rivers impassable,” stated
Koome.
“Similarly,
it is expected that road traffic, both human and vehicular, will be very heavy
next week. While police and NTSA officers have been deployed along the major
highways, we call upon all motorists to cooperate with the law enforcement
Officers to improve our service delivery.”
The
Police IG consequently implored road users to exercise caution as they also
adhere to traffic safety rules.
“In the
best interest of children that will be travelling back to school, and for the
safety of the general public, the National Police Service would like to caution
all motorists and boda boda riders to be extra vigilant on the roads, and
strictly comply with traffic regulations and rules,” he said.
