A police post in Mwea-West Kirinyaga County, has been closed and six officers transferred due to unresolved rent arrears.

The officers had been living rent-free in the house provided by businessman Mwangi Thuita, who died in 2018.

His daughter Irene Njeri stated that the officers were instructed to start paying rent after his death.

However, the arrears have since accumulated to more than Ksh.2 million, prompting the family to reclaim the property.

"Before my father died, he instructed the officers to start paying rent from 2018. The arrears have now exceeded Ksh.2 million, which is why we decided to reclaim our property and rent it out to others," said Njeri, the late Thuita's daughter.

Residents were taken aback as police officers moved their belongings into a lorry.

"Where are they going? They have greatly improved security here since 2016. What will we do now?" questioned Grace Wanjiru, a local resident.

Mwea West Police Commander Rashid Ali stated that residents will be served by Rukanga police post, located four kilometers away.
