Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has vowed not to relent on his push to have all tenants who live in city council houses pay rent.

Speaking during a church service on Sunday, the governor asked Nairobi residents to play their part to enable the county leadership to perform its duties.

He warned that rent defaulters will be evicted if they fail to comply with the order.

We will not allow that. It's either pay rent or face eviction. How can you stay in a rented house for 10 or 15 years without paying rent, and at the same time, you need services,” Sakaja stated.

The governor added that there is a need to build more houses to house residents as the city’s population is expected to increase in the coming years.

With a population of 7 million, Sakaja said, now is the time to prepare for population growth in the coming years.

He further boasted of cooperation with the National government, which he said has made the county enjoy the fruits of devolution.
