Parliament to hold special sitting on January 16

A notice from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula said that the sitting was granted after a request from Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed.

Members of Parliament (MPs) will address any urgent Messages from the National Executive and/or the Senate as part of their itinerary. 

They will table the report and Notice of Motion on the mediated version of the County Governments Additional Allocations Bill (Senate Bill No. 19 of 2024) subject to the conclusion of the mediation process;

Other reports to be tabled include that of the Committee on Appointments on its consideration of nominees for appointment as Cabinet Secretaries and another from the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations on its consideration of High Commissioners, Ambassadors, Permanent Representative and Consul-General nominees.

A report from the Departmental Committee on Labour on its consideration of nominees for appointment as Vice Chairperson and members of the Public Service Commission (PSC) will also be tabled.

Members will also conduct a debate on the tabled reports while also consider priority Bills among them the Startup Bill (Senate Bill No. 14 of 2022) and the Persons with Disabilities Bill (Senate Bill No. 7 of 2023).

President William Ruto made fresh nominations and reshuffles in his cabinet on December 19, 2024, which included ministerial positions, state corporations and appointments to Kenya’s foreign missions abroad.

Among the CS nominees are former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo (ICT), Mutahi Kagwe (Agriculture) and former Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui (Investment and Trade).

Nominees for various diplomatic roles include Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u (High Commissioner to Accra), Dr. Andrew Karanja (Ambassador to Brazil), Ababu Namwamba (Permanent Representative to the UNEP office in Nairobi) and Noor Gabow (Consul-General to Port-au-Prince).

President Ruto also re-assigned Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen to the Interior Ministry, after its former occupant Kithure Kindiki was appointed Deputy President.

The reshuffle also saw Salim Mvurya moved from the Investments, Trade and Industry Ministry to head the Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Ministry, filling the vacancy left by Murkomen's departure.
