Over 40,000 households comprising 181,000 people have voluntarily relocated from riparian reserves in Nairobi, including Mathare and Ngong rivers, in the ongoing government evacuation program.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki visited the affected areas and said the government has honoured its pledge to support each household with Ksh.10,000 for alternative rental premises and will prioritize them in the affordable housing program.

The CS said their presence in the riparian areas had posed a grave danger, as witnessed in last month's flooding.

Prof. Kindiki noted that the reclaimed riparian reserves are being trenched and fenced and the planting of riverine ecosystem trees is underway.

The Nairobi River will be unclogged, drained and rehabilitated with recreational facilities established for public use.

This reclamation will enhance security for nearby communities and help eliminate issues such as illicit brewing, narcotic drug peddling, and criminal hideouts.
