Over 1800 Kenyans apply for IEBC chairperson, commissioner positions

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel has announced that it received 1,848 applications for the Chairperson and members of the commission.

The selection panel chairperson Nelson Makanda said that a verification process of the applications has commenced and a list of all applicants will soon be published.

"The Panel would like to reassure the public that, members of the Selection Panel are committed to conducting a fair and transparent process. In this regard, we shall keep the public informed at all stages of the recruitment exercise," read a statement in part.

Positions to the electoral body's commission fell vacant on January 16, 2023, after chairperson Wafula Chebukati announced his exit alongside commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu whose 6-year term had lapsed.

Former IEBC Vice Chair Juliana Cherera and commissioners Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya and Francis Wanderi were dismissed from the commission after disputing the 2022 Presidential election results.

The four former Commissioners dubbed the ‘Cherera Four,’ threw a wide blanket of doubt on the credibility of last year's election with claims that the results declared by Chebukati were never tabulated as required.

They were accused of working with high-profile Azimio la Umoja coalition operatives to favour Raila Odinga's bid.

Hussein Marjan is the only remaining head of at commission acting as the IEBC CEO.
