Orengo to MPs: Don't abandon Kenyans in their time of need
Siaya Governor James Orengo has urged Members of Parliament to consider the public outcry on matters Finance Bill 2023.
Orengo said taxpayers are already burdened and approving Kenya Kwanza’s tax increase proposals will overburden the public who are already feeling the pinch of inflation.
Orengo while speaking during the burial of Patrick Obuong’ Wandare in Gem Constituency, pleaded with the legislators not to betray the public during the bill’s debate scheduled for next week, adding that taxpayers are already burdened and approving Kenya Kwanza’s tax increase proposals will overburden them.
“Kenyans who donated power to the MPS are pressed up with the many taxations and they are waiting to see if those they entrusted with positions abandon them during the hour of need,” he said.
The governor warned MPs against being hoodwinked with propaganda from the Kenya Kwanza administration as it will plunge the Country into more problems.
“Let our brothers from the National Assembly debate and decide as per the plea of the public.
They (legislators)must listen so that we have in the amendment Bill. When we have amendments then it will be possible to support economic growth," said Orengo.
“We shall remain glued on National television next week to see how those who abandoned Azimio Leader Raila Odinga will be debating on the finance bill adding that the MPs should put aside their interests and priorities Kenyans.”
The Bill's timeline of approval is June 30 which will coincide with the enactment of the Appropriation Law, 2023.
The Bill, which contains 84 clauses, seeks to amend various tax laws and related statutes to expand the tax base and allow the Kenya Revenue Authority to generate more revenue, especially from areas that have traditionally not effectively participated in contributing to the country’s tax basket.
Orengo was accompanied by Siaya Speaker George Okode defended the assembly over their bid to oust Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol.
“I want to tell Siaya people to have trust and confidence in the assembly saying the matters we are handling at the chambers are official and so parties making noise at the funerals over our move are wasting their time,” said Okode.
