One person killed following another gold mine accident in Bondo
A 43-year-old miner has died in a gold mine
accident at Thim Kachola village next to Waringa area in Bondo sub-county, Siaya County.
The miner, who has been identified as Denan
Onyango Michura, died instantly after the mining shaft collapsed on him at
around 2.30 pm on Thursday.
Edwin Ooro, one of the miners, said they were
finalizing the day’s work for their normal mining expedition when a stone which
had protruded inside the mining shaft that they were working inside collapsed.
Ooro said that there were four of them inside
the shaft, but the first three including himself managed to come out before the
shaft collapsed on the deceased, who was the last person behind.
Bondo Township location Chief Walter Omolo confirmed
the incident noting that the miner was hit and his head badly smashed by the
stone.
He stated that the miner’s body has since
been retrieved and taken to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary as investigations
begin into the matter.
The administrator took the opportunity to
caution members of the public against engaging in illegal mining activities,
noting that as far as they are concerned, that mining site had long been
closed.
Mr. Omolo advised that they should also be
using the right skill and equipment when conducting the mining activities to
avert such untimely loss of lives.
The accident has happened exactly two weeks
after eight people were trapped in another gold mine accident at Abimbo village,
where one miner is still trapped inside the shafts.
