Officer interdicted in Shauri Moyo shooting incident

By early Wednesday morning, the unrest had escalated, with angry protesters setting fire to a police vehicle and blocking a key road to Eastleigh with stones and burning tires.
The melee ensued after a deadly confrontation between residents and police officers in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
Reports indicated that a group of youths chased two undercover police officers for pursuing a suspect believed to be carrying bhang.
In retaliation, the officers opened fire and shot the suspect. The incident caused outrage among the locals, who barricaded roads around Shauri Moyo and Majengo area and burnt three houses and a police vehicle.
According to the National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the police identified the officer suspected of killing the young man.
The officer was disarmed and interdicted as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was invited to investigate the cop's conduct.
"Meanwhile, the National Police Service urges the public, particularly the youth in the affected area, to remain calm and to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that may assist in the investigations," the statement read in part.
"As a Service, we remain committed to our mandate of maintaining law and order."
