Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) Founder Dr Kennedy Odede has offered the organization's centres across the country as temporary shelters for flood victims.

These centres, totalling 19, are located in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kisumu counties.

“I want to urge people to move away from river banks. As SHOFCO, we have centres across the country and they can use them for now. We stand with the flood victims during this difficult time,” Dr Odede, who is on a working tour in Jamaica, said via a video he shared on his social media pages.

Additionally, Dr. Odede assured the flood victims that SHOFCO is mobilizing resources to provide essential aid, including food and medicine. He commended the Shofco Urban Network (SUN) youth for their efforts in rescuing and assisting flood victims in Nairobi's slums.

The flooding has led to an outbreak of waterborne diseases in Mathare and Kibera slums with the organization deploying Community Health Promoters (CHPs) to affected areas, providing medical assistance and distributing supplies such as aquatabs and emergency kits.

Dr Odede emphasized the importance of psychological support and healthcare for the victims, with healthcare outreaches being conducted in affected areas.

“We know that people need psychological support and healthcare and our teams have been on the ground to ensure that the victims are fully supported.

“We do healthcare outreaches through our health clinics because several people have experienced diarrhoea, especially in Mathare slums,” SHOFCO CEO Dr Kennedy Odede said.

The organisation is also mapping out highly affected areas in Kisumu, Bungoma, Homa Bay and Vihiga counties with a view to sending support in the coming days if the floods persist.
