October 17 it is, IEBC says
The fresh presidential election will be held on Tuesday, October 17, the electoral commission has announced.
Wafula Chebukati, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, said that there will be no fresh nominations in the presidential election rerun.
“In the fresh election, the petitioners before the Supreme Court, the Hon Raila Odinga and his running mate Hon Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and the 3rd respondent, H.E Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Samoei Ruto, shall be the only candidates,” read the statement released by the IEBC.
However, the Thirdway Alliance presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot has threatened to move to court over the decision to exclude him from the fresh presidential poll.
The electoral commission has said that it is revising the operation and procedural requirements for the conduct of the fresh election and will share details with stakeholders.
PERSONNEL CHANGES
However, the IEBC has not made any personnel changes that it had pledged to make following the judgement but has urged the Supreme Court to release the detailed judgment so that it can identify areas of improvement.
After the invalidation of the re-election of President Kenyatta on Friday, NASA leaders said the IEBC as currently constituted should not conduct the fresh poll.
“If Uhuru and Ruto think that Wafula Chebukati, Ezra Chiloba and company will conduct the fresh polls they are dreaming. How can you be sure that they will not steal elections again? How can you task a hyena to take care of goats?” Odinga said during a campaign rally in Nairobi.
However, Jubilee leaders have insisted that there will be no changes made to the IEBC Commission.
