Nyeri doctors warn of industrial action over salary arrears, promotions
Doctors in Nyeri County have
warned the devolved unit’s leadership of looming industrial action if their
demands continue to be ignored.
This came after the doctors held
a meeting with officials of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and
Dentists Union (KMPDU), led by National Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, on
Wednesday evening.
The medics complained of a myriad
of unsolved issues include failure to effect promotions and implement
contractual engagements, lack of comprehensive medical covers, as well as basic
salary arrears.
“The engaging forum involved
discussions on potential solutions, including the consideration of an
industrial action to prompt the county's response,” Dr. Atellah said after the
meeting.
“With over 100 Nyeri county
doctors actively participating, their strong solidarity was commendable with a
unified call for action now.”
He added: “This event marks the
beginning of KMPDU's broader plan to engage with doctors across various
counties, aiming to understand their challenges and collaboratively find
solutions. The union's commitment to grassroots engagement remains steadfast,
emphasizing collective efforts and open dialogue in addressing healthcare
sector challenges.”
The
meeting with Nyeri doctors came after an earlier engagement with the Embu
County government which led to the signing of a return-to-work formula for
medics stationed in the county who had also gone on strike.
