Nyamira MCAs table motion to impeach Governor Amos Nyaribo
Esise Member of County Assembly Josiah Mang’era tabled the motion to have Governor Nyaribo ousted from office on nine grounds including abuse of office.
The Nyamira County Assembly was sealed off for the better part of Tuesday with a contingent of security officers manning the assembly grounds after a group of unknown assailants barricaded the entrance of the assembly using stones on Monday night.
The bone of contention was the tabling of an impeachment motion against Governor Nyaribo.
Despite the tension, at least 30 MCAs made their way to the assembly and the motion to impeach Governor Nyaribo was tabled before the House.
“I now give a notice of motion to consider debate and approve a motion of approval for removal of Governor Nyaribo pursuant to Article 111 of the Kenyan Constitution, Standing Orders number 62,” Mang'era said.
In the motion, the MCA accused Governor Nyaribo of 9 counts of abuse of office including misuse of public funds, favouritism, irregular recruitment of staff, and flagging off of empty containers disguised as medical drugs among others.
“We have laid our evidence, we have witnesses, who will help us build a case, we are not doing this because of personal reasons with the governor, it is out of our conscience as leaders. It’s only in Nyamira where there are no functional street lights,” said Nyamira County Assembly Minority leader Minda Riech.
With the motion tabled, all focus shifts to the Members of the County Assembly who are set to debate the motion and vote either in favour of or against the motion on Tuesday next week.
