Nyamira Governor Nyaribo calls youth for talks, counterpart Ole Lenku condemns county protests
Nyamira Governor Amos
Nyaribo has called youth in Nyamira for talks, following the "Occupy
County" demonstrations last Tuesday.
Speaking at Sironga,
where he had visited to inspect the progress of the ongoing construction of
Nyamira Industrial Park, Nyaribo requested the youth to meet him next Wednesday
at Uhuru Gardens in Nyamira town for an engagement to resolve the ongoing
demonstrations against his administration.
The thousands of youths
who staged demonstrations at the county headquarters want the county government
to address issues including a heavy wage bill, lack of development,
unemployment, and stalled projects.
The youth have planned
another round of "Occupy County" demonstrations for Tuesday.
Elsewhere in Kajiado,
Governor Joseph Ole Lenku condemned the widespread violence and looting
witnessed during the anti-government protests in the county.
Speaking at his county
residence, Ole Lenku emphasized that the county leadership and security team
will act decisively to prevent such violence in the future.
He further expressed
concerns that these incidents could disrupt inter-community relations and
hinder the county's development agenda.
Ole Lenku subsequently advocated
for dialogue to heal the country following the protests that escalated into
violence, resulting in death and property loss
Ong’ata Rongai and
Kitengela towns in Kajiado have borne the brunt of the protests, with reports
of 3 to 5 deaths, multiple gunshot injuries and property damage estimated in
the millions.
