A 56-year-old man is nursing a gunshot wound at his home in Freer Town, Nyali constituency, Mombasa County, after allegedly being shot by police officers on patrol.

Omar Ali, who has been bedridden for the past two months, claims that police officers who were on patrol shot him on the right thigh on October 15. He has now been in pain and sorrow.

“Nilipofika pale dukani mateja wanapigana na polisi. Polisi akakasirika akawa anarusha risasi. Bahati mbaya ile risasi ikakuja kwangu nikaanguka pale,” he said.

Despite rushing him to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment and paying for the medical services, the officers allegedly ordered his discharge, returned him home and abandoned him.

Omar says the officers returned after a month with a lawyer and forced him to sign a document without explaining its contents.

They allegedly left behind a package containing fifty thousand shillings.

“Wakili huyu anakuja, tia saini hapa. Namwambia saini ya nini, si mungoje niite watu wangu. Wakaniambia kwani uko na watu wewe. Yule polisi ambaye alikuwa amekaa hapa akaanza kushika mkono wangu, bonyeza kwenye hii mabati hapa, akabonyeza kwenye makaratasi. Ni kama amenidhulumu,” Omar said.

Since then, Omar says he has been seeking justice, including reporting the incident to the police, without success.

He is now calling on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to intervene and investigate the matter.
