NTSA's Njao wants quick implementation of 2024 Road Safety Plan

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General George Njao says it is time to start enforcing the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028 launched by the President William Ruto in April.

According to Njao, the implementation will help in addressing the devastating toll of road accidents in Kenya.

Addressing the National Helmet Wearing Coalition board member’s meeting at the NTSA headquarters in Nairobi, Njao commended the efforts made by the coalition to enhance the awareness of motorcycle riders and passengers’ safety. 

“In the next few weeks, I will be meeting all the stakeholders in order to plan on how this will be implemented, we have lost too many lives on our roads and enough is enough,” he said, adding that they are done with boardroom meetings, and it’s now time to act.

With the third face of the motorcycle safety campaign underway, the one and half-year project funded by FIA and Transaid starts this month through December 2025.

Transaid programs support Manager Jason Finch said that under the preference of motorcycle helmet wearing, there is a big push to secure support necessary to install a helmet testing lab in Kenya which is significant demand.

“It’s important now that Kenya has a national Road Safety Action Plan, the first on in Africa and with the right stakeholders the testing lab will be a good place to begin,” Finch said.

“The director General has advocated for all motor cycle riders to be registered with a Sacco and as an organization we will be able to easily reach them and work for a common goal,” he added.

Transaid Kenya boss Grace Wahome says the response from motorcycle riders in Nairobi has been positive, prompting them start similar campaigns in other parts of the country.

“Our main goal is to enhance riders’ safety by wearing quality helmets, we have approached many saccos in Nairobi which have embraced our agenda in distributing quality helmets,” she said.

The National Helmet wearing coalition was started in 2021 by former president Uhuru Kenyatta and the then Federation International de Automobile FIA president Jean Todt to enhance motorcycle helmet wearing in the country.
