NTSA set to roll out digital cameras on highways to record speeding vehicles

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced that the pilot phase for the use of digital cameras along major highways is still ongoing and within the planned six-month period.

The pilot phase of the project, which began in November 2024, saw the government place cameras strategically along key highways such as Thika Superhighway, Southern Bypass and Mombasa Road.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Transport, NTSA Director General George Njao appealed to the MPs to support its implementation by allocating the necessary budgetary resources to finance the project.

He explained that the next phase would include the rollout of the additional 408 enrollment kits to assist in updating driver information.

According to Njao, the kits will be ideal, especially for Kenyans in the diaspora who can't return home easily.

"We have now six months’ test and the data is now accurately captured; the next phase is to roll out the additional 408 enrollment kits," he said.

"We have other regulations at the AG chambers for review, but we don't have a budgetary allocation to be able to roll out in the whole country."

Transport CS Davis Chirchir also echoed Njao's remarks, saying that the digital system, once implemented, would identify and track individuals breaking the law.

He added that the government would procure more digital cameras, both fixed and mobile, to improve road safety.

‘’There are some digital cameras installed in some locations for testing; we've collected enough data and should be going into the second phase of institutionalizing and procuring some of these cameras, both fixed and mobile, so that we can improve the behaviour in the roads," he stated.

The lawmakers lauded the ministry for the use of technology to curb bad driving habits.

The digital system captures a motorist's speed along a certain highway and immediately sends a ticket to their mobile device, informing them of their infractions.
