'Not your moment for TikTok clips!' Kingi warns senators during Gachagua impeachment trial

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi addresses the House during DP Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment trial on October 16, 2024.

A raucous caused by Senators on Thursday during Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment trial attracted the ire of Speaker Amason Kingi who warned them from engaging in acts unbecoming of the House.

Speaker Kingi had accorded a chance for the senators to either seek clarifications or ask questions following statements made by witness Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Deputy CEO Abdi Ahmed and Gachagua's counsel Ndegwa Njiru.

Thereafter, murmurs and movements could be seen and heard from the House, prompting Speaker Kingi to caution the House to take the process with utmost gravity.

"Honourable senators, when you're given a chance to seek clarification or ask a question, it is not a moment to get TikTok clips. Please, this is a very serious matter. Let us not embarrass this House," Kingi warned.

In past sessions, several lawmakers are fond of taking selfies and videos to post on their social media platforms.

This has led to criticism from the public who question the negligent nature of the legislators on matters before the House.

The session got heated when some of the senators felt disgruntled for not being accorded a chance to speak.

Speaker Kingi issued the first caution to Seki Lenku (Kajiado), Chute Mohammed (Marsabit) and Okiya Omtatah (Busia) for being out of order and warned them against causing a commotion.

"Honourable Seki, this hearing will terminate beyond midnight today, let the witness respond to the queries thereafter we will go for another round. You cannot say the chair is biased. Unless you apologise, I will throw you out," Kingi sternly warned.

The Senate is set to conclude Gachagua's impeachment trial on Thursday, which could extend to Friday should they fail to conclude the matter by midnight.

Gachagua, who has been in office for two years, seeks to secure another lifeline at the Senate after the National Assembly voted to kick him out of office.
