NITA, private sector join forces to tackle youth unemployment in Kenya

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), is partnering with the private sector to offer hands-on skills training and job placement opportunities for young people across the country.

This initiative aims to equip the youth with practical skills, bridging the gap between education and employment, and fostering economic growth.

“Through the Kenya Youth Empowerment Project, we have trained over 65,000 youth, equipping them with competencies that enable them to either gain employment or start their own businesses. This partnership with the private sector ensures that our training is relevant and aligned with industry needs.” Joseph Maina from NITA.

At a recent graduation ceremony at the Nairobi College of Bread and Confectionery Technology, over 400 young graduates celebrated their achievements, marking a pivotal moment in their journey toward sustainable employment.

Among them were 10 beneficiaries from the Hope for Kenya Slam Adolescence Initiative (HKSI), which collaborates with NITA to empower vulnerable youth through education and skills training.

“Our collaboration with NITA and organizations like HKSI is essential for creating pathways to employment for our graduates. The baking industry is one of the best employers, and our graduates are well-prepared to meet its demands,” said James Ngumi CEO and Founder, Nairobi College of Bread and Confectionery Technology

Melvin Ouyo, the founder of HKSI, expressed her pride in the resilience and determination of the graduates.

“Today, we celebrate not just the achievements of these young people but their journey from hopelessness to empowerment. Many of them had lost faith in their futures, and now they are smiling, ready to contribute to society,” she said.

With plans to expand its reach, NITA is set to scale up training programs across all 47 counties, aiming to train an additional 90,000 youth over the next five years. This collaborative effort between the government and private sector aims to empower Kenya's youth, reduce unemployment rates, and contribute to the nation’s economic development.
