New Nairobi customer service centre opens in Ruai, bringing county services closer to residents

Residents along the busy Kangundo Road and parts of Utawala have a reason to smile following the opening of a new Nairobi County Customer Service Centre in Ruai, located directly opposite the District Officer’s (DO’s) office.

The centre is part of Governor Johnson Sakaja’s broader initiative to decentralize county services and improve accessibility for Nairobi residents.

Ogola Otieno, a Kamulu resident and local business owner, expressed his relief:

“For a long time, I had to travel all the way to City Hall and queue for hours. Now, with the new centre in Ruai, I can access licenses and other services right here. It’s a huge convenience.”

Speaking during a visit to City Hall’s customer service centre, Governor Sakaja confirmed that the Ruai branch is now fully operational. He emphasized that this is part of a citywide effort to bring essential services closer to the people.

“When I assumed office, I realized how many residents were forced to travel long distances and endure long queues to access services,” he said.

“We introduced the Unified Business Permit to streamline operations, and now we’re establishing service centres at the grassroots. Ruai is already up and running, and we’re rolling out more centres in Dandora, Makadara, and other areas.”

According to the Governor, over 7,000 residents have already been served at the Ruai centre since its launch earlier this year.

“People want to comply with regulations, but access has always been the biggest challenge. By bringing services closer to where people live and work, we’re removing that obstacle,” he added.

Governor Sakaja also announced an extension of the deadline for land rate payments to April 15, with no penalties.

“We recognize the financial challenges our residents are facing. That’s why we’ve extended the deadline. Take advantage of this opportunity—visit our website or any of our customer service centres for assistance,” he urged.

In the current financial year, Governor Sakaja aims to boost county revenue after achieving a record-high collection of Ksh 12.8 billion—the highest since the start of devolution—in the financial year ending June 2024.
