New LSK President Faith Odhiambo sworn in
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President
Faith Odhiambo has called on the three arms of government; the Executive,
Legislature and Judiciary to remain independent in order to provide checks and
balances.
Ms. Odhiambo spoke on Friday moments after
LSK’s Annual General Meeting and her swearing-in alongside fellow newly elected
officials of the lawyers’ body at the Rift Valley Sports Club in Nakuru.
She acknowledged that she was stepping into
the crucial role at a time when the courts are seemingly being disrespected and
tested.
Ms. Odhiambo called on the lawyers and the Judiciary
to rally behind her in the quest to ensure they solve the challenges that the
country is facing including overtaxation and implementation of new laws by the
government.
“Let’s reunite as one society, let us work as
one...so many challenges at the helm being the housing levy, opportunities for
the lawyers, doctors strike…there are many things rising. We are suffering from
overtaxation, we have to fight to uphold the rule of law...the courts are an independent
arm of government, the three arms of government should work independently,” she
stated.
New LSK Vice President Mwaura Kabata, on his part, added: “We promise for a sustained law society for the benefit of the Kenyans, an anchor on constututionallism and the rule of law, we are at a time when the courts are being disrespected.”
