New IEBC panel faces monumental task, warns CJ Martha Koome

Chief Justice Martha Koome has emphasized the critical role of electoral integrity in safeguarding Kenya’s democracy.

Speaking during the swearing-in of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel, Justice Koome urged the panel to insulate itself from external influences that could undermine its mission, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.

Justice Koome highlighted that the two-year delay in reconstituting the IEBC was caused by competing political interests, which she said deprived some Kenyans of their right to representation. Addressing the newly sworn-in panel, she described their task as monumental and of utmost significance to the nation.

The Chief Justice issued a cautionary statement, warning the selection panel against succumbing to political pressures or partisan interests that could derail their work.

Justice Koome outlined principles necessary for a credible electoral process, urging the panel to appoint commissioners of untainted credibility and unwavering commitment to independence, impartiality, and constitutional principles.

The sworn-in panel members include Kiome Lindah Gakii, Adams Oloo, James Evans Misati, Nicodemus Kipchirchir Bore, Koki Muli, and Nelson Makanda.

They have 90 days to recruit new commissioners for the IEBC. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has instructed the Parliamentary Service Commission to ensure the panel has the necessary resources, including a budget, to facilitate its work.

Despite the panel’s inauguration, legal challenges persist. The Court of Appeal is set to hear a case brought by Augustus Muli of the National Liberal Party, who is contesting the inclusion of Koki Muli on the panel.

The newly appointed IEBC commissioners will replace former chairperson Wafula Chebukati, Prof. Abdi Yakub Guliye, and Boya Molu, whose terms have expired, as well as Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyangaya, and Francis Wanderi, who resigned, and Irene Masit, who was dismissed.
