New-born baby buried alive in Makueni, mother arrested

A one-day-old baby was found alive after being buried in Kwa Nyunyi village County, Makueni County.

The area assistant chief, Francis Kaluma, ordered the family to exhume the child’s body after receiving a tip from neighbours.

“I was informed that a woman had delivered and buried her baby alive. I went there and demanded to know where the baby was buried. When they exhumed the body, we were shocked to find the child still alive,” Kaluma said.

The baby was immediately rushed to Sultan Hamud Hospital for medical attention, but sadly succumbed to injuries and passed away on Sunday morning.

The mother of the child, along with the grandmother, have been arrested by police and are currently being detained at Salama Police Station.

They are awaiting arraignment in court to face charges related to the death of the infant and the illegal burial.

The incident has raised alarm in the community with calls to address cases of child neglect and abuse. Local authorities have vowed to pursue justice for the child while urging residents to report any suspicious activities regarding the welfare of children.
