The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK)
has banned all political activities in member churches including speeches by
politicians and announcements of their contributions in churches.
This is barely a week after the Anglican
Church of Kenya (ACK) in a bold statement barred the opposition brigade from
addressing its congregants at the St. Stephens Cathedral in Nairobi, and
directing the same in its churches countrywide.
NCCK has dealt the politicians yet another blow, publishing eight new
guidelines to govern and stop politics at the pulpit.
In a statement issued after an executive
committee meeting held in Limuru, Kiambu
County, NCCK stated that from now onwards, politicians should be encouraged to
address people or media outside the worship sanctuary.
Further, any monetary contributions by
politicians should be treated the same as offerings by all other members, and
should not have any funfair or be announced.
The statement further cautions religious
leaders to desist from endorsing or opposing politicians or political parties
and maintain an objective voice of the church.
The church is also guided to avoid
exaggerated recognition of political leaders who attend the services to prevent
projecting a higher level of importance than the other members of the church.
The statement further says the clergy
should, on behalf of the congregation, raise any issue of concern with the
politicians who attend services as relates to their areas of responsibility.
The directive also asks heads of churches
to maintain oneness of purpose and ensure these guidelines are followed in
their different congregations.
